Young Louisiana DOTD Contract Worker Killed while Doing Job Assisting Motorist in Need in New Orleans

Accident7

The City of New Orleans and its residents were hit with terrible news earlier this week after a young Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development contract worker was hit and killed on the road while simply doing his job. According to local news reports, the New Orleans Police Department responded to a car collision on Tuesday, September 24, at around 1:46 p.m. on Louisiana’s Interstate 610 West at the St. Bernard Avenue exit. The car collision is thought by investigators to have started when 26-year-old Oscar G. Perez-Moran of Arabi, Louisiana, veered off of the road into the shoulder of the highway, where 23-year-old Eric Anthony Jr., of New Orleans, was assisting a motorist as part of his job. Anthony had stopped to assist the driver of a disabled 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche as part of his job as a contract worker for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. Perez-Moran is believed to have “traveled off the roadway on the right shoulder, striking Anthony”, and seriously injuring him. Anthony was taken to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment, but he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The driver of the disabled Chevrolet Avalanche was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and was not injured. Perez-Moran, who had not been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision, suffered injuries that are said to be “minor” and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Although the investigation into the accident is still pending, Perez-Moran was, ultimately, charged with negligent homicide and other traffic-related charges, for causing the fatal car accident that took young Eric Anthony, Jr.’s life.
