Two Pedestrians Killed in Unrelated Car Accidents in Louisiana’s Cajun Country – Rights and Options of Surviving Family Members under Louisiana Wrongful Death Laws Explained

Pedest6

Not one, but two fatal pedestrian accidents occurred at the tail end of last week, raising the conversation about what the surviving family members of victims of fatal pedestrian accidents can do in Louisiana under Louisiana personal injury wrongful death laws. According to local news reports and the Louisiana State Police, the first of the two horrific pedestrian-involved accidents occurred on the evening of July 13, 2024, just before 10:00 p.m. At that time, 75-year-old Francis Firmin of New Iberia, Louisiana, was placing cones around his vehicle that had entered a ditch in the southbound lane of LA 83. As Mr. Firmin attempted to recover his vehicle, a 2002 Ford Mustang that was traveling south on LA 83 hit him. Mr. Firmin suffered severe injuries as a result of the collision, and he later died after being transported to the hospital for emergency medical care. The driver of the Ford Mustang was not suspected to be intoxicated at the time of the accident, and the crash remains under investigation.

The second fatal pedestrian accident occurred on Sunday, July 14, a little before 6:00 p.m. in the evening. According to the Louisiana State Police, 41-year-old Ryan Trahan of Rayne, Louisiana was killed as he was walking east in the westbound lane of Highway 90. As Mr. Trahan traversed the highway, an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound, struck Mr. Trahan, and failed to stop to render aid. Mr. Trahan was pronounced dead at the scene of the hit-and-run accident. Louisiana State Troopers are currently working to determine the identity of the driver who hit Mr. Trahan, and the horrific accident remains under investigation at this time.
