Tragic Construction Accident Involving Pipe in Michigan Kills Louisiana Construction Worker on Out-of-State Job

ConstructionHole

New construction can present a number of hazards to construction workers, no matter what state or country they work in. Dealing with heights, depths, extreme temperatures, sharp and heavy objects with the potential to fall, massive machinery and tools, and even vehicles on the job, construction workers have a number of hazards to watch out for in their normal course of work. One of the dangers on a new construction site, however, that may not be as well known to the public (and perhaps also to construction companies and crews) is fitting pipes. When working with pipes in new construction, a hollow piece of PVC that seems otherwise harmless can become a projectile that can kill a worker, even when wearing protective gear. Such was the case in Michigan in mid-September this year when a pipe a worker was working with on a new construction site killed him, despite the fact that he was wearing head protection. The worker’s untimely and tragic death highlights the dangers that pipes can present in construction work for construction workers on the job in Mississippi and throughout the country.

A Deadly Pipe Testing Accident in Holland, Michigan

According to local reports, a 41-year-old construction worker from Louisiana working for Jesco, Inc., out of Mississippi, was working at the LG Chem Facility in Holland, Michigan in mid-September this year when he was killed by a pipe that he was working with on site. It is reported that as construction crews were testing a pressurized pipe at the new construction project, it broke free and became projectile, hitting the worker in the head. Despite the fact that the worker was wearing a helmet, he was severely injured and was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, the worker ultimately succumbed to the head injury at the hospital and died. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration stated of the deadly accident, “MIOSHA has initiated an investigation of the incident that occurred at a worksite in Holland on September 15, 2023. The victim was an employee of Jesco Inc. out of Mississippi. MIOSHA cannot provide information on an open investigation. Typically, this type of investigation may take several weeks or months to complete.” MIOSHA also advised that anyone interested in obtaining more information can submit a Freedom of Information Act request.
