St. Louis Teens Street Race through Construction Zone, Construction Worker Hit and Killed
Two St. Louis, Missouri teens are facing criminal charges after a deadly street race left one construction worker dead. According to local news reports, WTVM, on Friday, April 5, at around 10:35 p.m., St. Louis teens Deodre Robinson and Patrick Aten were racing each other in south St. Louis County, when Robinson is said to have lost control of his vehicle, and hit two construction workers. Both teens are said to have been racing each other at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. Tragically, one of the construction workers that Robinson hit, identified as 34-year-old Christopher Johnson, was fatally injured as a result of the crash, and he died at the scene of the accident. The other construction worker that was hit by Robinson was taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment for “serious injuries.” Robinson and Aten have both been charged with criminal charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault. Robinson also faces criminal charges of operating a vehicle on a highway without a driver’s license. Both teens are being held on a $150,000 cash bond, and the case is still ongoing.
Construction Workers Face Dangers on Public Roads
There is no doubt that construction workers who work on public roads or near high-traffic areas are at risk of being injured or killed on the job. According to the Electronic Library of Construction Occupational Safety and Health (ELCOSH), there are some measures that construction workers and their employers can take to make roadside construction zones safer for construction workers. First, ELCOSH advises that workers should conduct a “hazard assessment of the worksite”. Next, ELCOSH suggests that construction workers never put themselves at risk of being hit by a vehicle, and to avoid any situations where there is no “escape route”. Thirdly, ELCOSH advises that construction workers avoid attempting to direct or re-route traffic, unless they have been designated as a flagger and are following the rules that apply to flaggers. Fourth, ELCOSH notes that construction workers should use flags and warning signs on the road to alert drivers of the construction zone and workers on the road. Finally, workers should wear high-visibility clothing and gear, suggest ELCOSH, so that they are easy for drivers on the road to see.
