Pittsburgh Woman Killed by Loose Steel Drum, Wrongful Death Claims Explained

WrongfulDeath5

News of the death of a woman beloved by both her family and a community has spread across the internet like wildfire. The nature of 51-year-old Aleia Lopez’s death is both gruesome and hard to believe, as no one could have expected the chain of events that led to her untimely and tragic passing. According to local news reports, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ms. Lopez was walking, simply as a pedestrian, at the intersection of DeSoto and O’Hara streets new UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital where she worked as an executive assistant, when a massive steel cylinder became “loose” for unknown reasons at a nearby construction site, barreled through a chain-link fence, and hit Ms. Lopez. Although bystanders are said to have attempted life-saving measures, Ms. Lopez succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene of the accident after paramedics arrived.

Ms. Lopez’s mother said of her daughter’s horrific and unexpected death, “[She was] the rock for her three children, Angelia, Leilani, and Ethan.” Mayor Ed Gainey said of Ms. Lopez’s death by the loose cylinder at a public works project, “At a time when words simply fall short, let’s come together to lift up the entire Oakland community, extending empathy and compassion to all those impacted…may her memory live on as a continued blessing to those who knew and loved her.”

The horrific accident, which happened on Friday, May 3, is said to be part of Pittsburgh’s $240 million Victory Heights initiative. The investigation into Ms. Lopez’s death is still ongoing, and a GoFundMe page has been set up for the family.
