Philadelphia Construction Worker Dead after being Electrocuted, Falling from Ladder at Worksite

ConstructionAcc1

A Philadelphia construction worker is sadly dead after he suffered fatal injuries related to an electrocution accident and falling from a ladder. According to local news reports, ABC 6 Action News Philadelphia, the construction worker was working at a work site in Philadelphia’s Overbrook neighborhood on the 6500 block of Lansdowne Avenue on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 8. Officials report that the construction worker was working on a project up on a ladder when he was electrocuted, and then fell from the ladder. Although the construction worker was rushed to the hospital for emergency medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time after he arrived. Although the construction worker’s identity has not yet been released, and details are sparse as local law enforcement and officials investigate, officials report that the construction worker was 49 years old at the time of his death. The 49-year-old Philadelphia construction worker’s untimely and tragic death underscores just how dangerous falls are in the construction industry, and serves as an alarm bell to sound off the risks of falls in construction work.

Falls in Construction Work: “The Leading Cause of Death in Construction”

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which has its own campaign called “OSHA’s Fall Prevention Campaign”, falls are the leading cause of worker fatalities in construction. In 2020 alone, according to OSHA, there were 351 falls to a lower level as a cause of death in a total of 1,008 fatal construction accidents. OSHA also strongly emphasizes in its campaign that falling deaths are preventable deaths. OSHA urges construction industry employers to plan ahead when it comes to worker safety, and has a three-step plan for preventing falls in the construction industry: plan ahead to get the job done safely, provide the right equipment to workers, and train all workers to use provided equipment in a safe manner. One tip that OSHA provides to employers is to make sure that the cost of safety equipment is included in any bid given to a project. OSHA notes, “For example, in a roofing job, think about all of the different fall hazards, such as holes or skylights and leading edges, then plan and select fall and protection suitable to that work, such as personal fall arrest systems.”
