New Orleans Contractor Employer Fined in Connection with November 2023 Worker Death

WC_13

A New Orleans-based steel contractor is facing serious fines levied by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in connection with the death of a worker last November. According to The Advocate, Nucor Steel, a steel and steel products company, and a New Orleans contractor-employer, have been fined over $27,400 for “serious” safety violations related to the tragic and fatal workplace accident.

The terrible workplace accident occurred back in November, 2023, when worker Donald Mesman, Jr., a 52-year-old New Orleans man, was working at the Nucor Steel plant in St. James Parish when he was effectively crushed by a metal chute that fell as a result of demolition work. Mr. Mesman sustained “multiple blunt force injuries” as a result of the massive chute falling on him, and he was killed. Mr. Mesman had been a Nucor Steel employee for four years before the fatal workplace accident occurred. At the time of the accident, he had been overseeing contractors work on the steel chute. Importantly, the OSHA fines assessed against Nucor Steel and the contractor employer are reserved for “serious violations” are reserved for health and safety hazards that “could cause an accident or illness that would most likely result in death or serious physical harm.”
