Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving School Bus in Pascagoula, Mississippi Results in Injuries to Driver, Several Students
When we send out kids off to school, to the various school camps that they get invited to throughout their school days, and to sports games and band competitions, we expect that they will arrive at their destination safely, and return home unharmed. Indeed, America’s school buses – bright yellow for safety and visibility – are thought of as being a safe and convenient way for Mississippi school kids to travel wherever they need to go, in the hands of a school district bus driver employee. However, the truth of the matter is that accidents involving school buses, as terrible as they are, can and do happen, and innocent children may be injured – or worse, killed – in school bus-involved accidents. One such frightening multi-vehicle school bus accident happened in Mississippi just last week.
According to local news reports, on the evening of Friday, November 22, a school bus that was transporting approximately 40 high school students from Pascagoula high school was involved in a multi-car accident. The accident happened at around 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of Market Street and Polk Avenue in Pascagoula. The bus was taking the Pascagoula High School students to a high school playoff game in Hattiesburg, and the students that were traveling to the event are reported to have been members of the Pascagoula High School band.
The accident reportedly involved a total of three vehicles, including the school bus. One of the drivers involved in the accident and four students were injured, and the injuries are said initially to have been “minor.” The Pascagoula Police Department released the following Facebook post about the accident, “The Pascagoula Police Department is currently investigating a traffic accident that occurred today, November 22, 2024. The accident took place at Market Street and Polk Street, which involved a school bus, traveling with students from the band, that was headed westbound on Polk Street and came in contact with a vehicle headed southbound on Market Street. This caused the bus to veer into the New York Pizza building. One of the drivers and four students sustained minor injuries and sought medical attention at a local hospital.”
