Mississippi Worker Dies in Horrific Work Accident after Being Buried in Hot Asphalt

WorkersComp5

The gruesome and tragic death of a Mississippi contractor who died after being buried in boiling hot asphalt has shocked a community, and serves as a terrifying example of how serious and damaging workplace accidents in Mississippi can be. According to national news reports, earlier this month on Tuesday, November 5, 41-year-old Darrell Sheriff, who was working at a job site in Mississippi, was killed while attempting to repair a hydraulic line. Investigators believe that Sheriff was underneath a dump truck that was hauling hot asphalt attempting to repair the hydraulic line when the tailgate of the truck somehow opened, and the hot asphalt poured onto him. Sheriff, who was a contractor, was covered in the material as a result of the accident, and was said to be effectively “buried under hot asphalt.” The terrible and fatal work accident occurred at AJ Materials, an asphalt services company.

According to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, witnesses and others that were at the scene of the accident attempted to help Sheriff, and although “he tried to fight to make it through those injuries [sic] but it was just too enormous for him to survive.” Chief Wade also noted that the horrific death left both witnesses and family members of Sheriff “traumatized.” Sheriff was said to be a “good, hardworking family man who was just trying to make a living.” Sheriff’s death was ultimately ruled as an accidental death.

What Rights and Options do Mississippi Families Have if They Lose a Loved One to a Fatal Workplace Accident?

In light of the horrific asphalt accident that killed Darrell Sheriff, it is important for Mississippi families to know their rights under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws. Under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws, certain close dependent family members of workers who were killed on the job may be entitled to workers’ compensation death benefits.
