Mississippi Teen Receives Sentence for Killing Nurse in Drunk Driving Car Accident

DrunkDriver2

A Mississippi teen from Rankin County has been sentenced in connection with a horrific drunk driving car accident that left one woman dead. According to local news reports, Mississippi WLBT 3, Colby James Tackett was sentenced to 25 years – the maximum sentence for the drunk driving killing—and he will spend 15 years behind bars in prison, with 10 years suspended with supervised probation. Tackett was just 17 years old when the fatal drunk driving car accident occurred. He had also been arrested just two weeks before he decided to get behind the wheel while intoxicated once again. In October, 2022, Tackett killed Beverly Luckett, a nurse and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) advocate who was 62 years old at the time of her death. The accident occurred when the intoxicated Tackett swerved into Luckett’s traffic lane, and collided with her vehicle head-on. Tuckett had a .131 blood alcohol level at the time of the accident (Mississippi’s legal blood alcohol limit is only .08).

Tackett apparently pleaded guilty to the charges against him, which consisted of aggravated drunk driving under the influence resulting in the death of Luckett. Madison/Rankin County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said of the tragic case, “This is a heart-wrenching case. The Luckett family lost the matriarch of their family in a preventable tragedy…It was not lost on anyone that Mr. Tackett should have received the proverbial wake-up call when he was arrested for underage drinking a mere 13 days before.”
