Mississippi Ranks High When it Comes to the Nation’s “Unhappiest Workers” – Could Worker Safety be a Factor?

WorkersComp4

Mississippi, unfortunately, has some of the most unhappy employees in the United States, according to the Biloxi Sun Herald. The Mississippi newspaper reviewed a study by Select Software Reviews compiled using data and statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and found some startling information about the happiness (or lack thereof) of workers in Mississippi and other neighboring and close southern states. But why are Mississippi workers so unhappy, and does the workplace environment and the health and safety of workers contribute to the unhappiness of workers in the Magnolia State? To help Mississippi workers better understand the job landscape in their home state, and to spread awareness about what Mississippi workers can do if they are, in fact, injured on the job and need legal assistance, we answer those questions here.

Mississippi Makes Top 5 Unhappy Southern States for Workers

As the Biloxi Sun Herald explains, the Select Software Reviews study included a “happiness index” to determine how happy the workers in each state actually are with hard metrics. The happiness index used factors such as annual wages, number of employees who quit, paid time off policies and laws, weekly work schedule, and, importantly, injuries, to gauge the happiness of workers. Using that index, and basing it on a scale of 1-100 (with 100 being the top happiness score), Mississippi received a 37.58 happiness index score, placing it in the number 5 slot on the list of the unhappiest southern states for workers (and the 29th unhappiest state in the United States). Mississippi’s southern neighbors also placed high on the list of the unhappiest states for workers, with Georgia coming in as the most unhappy state in the United States (happiness index score of 29.62), North Carolina coming in just ahead of Mississippi with a happiness index score of 38.95 (putting the state in 28th place overall) and West Virginia taking first place as a the state that is the most “happy” for southern workers (happiness index score of 48.31, placing West Virginia at 12 overall in the United States for happy workers, and first place for southern workers).

Worker Injury and Health and Safety May Contribute to Mississippi Worker Happiness

Worker working conditions and environment and the risk of injury on the job may contribute to worker happiness and satisfaction on the job. Accordingly, Mississippi workers may feel that they are more at risk of serious injury or health and safety hazards than workers in other states. It is important for workers in Mississippi to know that if they are injured on the job and they are unable to work, they may be entitled to important Mississippi workers’ compensation benefits to get them back on their feet and back to their regular jobs. In order to determine whether you may have a case for workers’ compensation benefits in Mississippi, it is best to speak with an experienced Mississippi workers’ compensation lawyer as soon as possible.
