Luling, Louisiana Family Mourning Loss of Daughter to Drunk Driving Car Accident on Anniversary of Death Learns Shocking News that Killer was Released after Only Serving Months in Jail
As families all over Louisiana prepare for the winter 2024 holidays, some families are reeling from the recent loss of those that they will not share the festivities with this year. Indeed, while families across the Pelican State put up their trees, deck the halls with lights and decorations, wrap their presents, and toast with holiday cheer, some Louisiana families are left with only happy memories of years gone by, and an empty seat at the dinner table and around the tree. Unfortunately, one such family who lost a loved one during the 2023 Christmas holiday is experiencing just that, compounded with the news that their beloved family member’s killer was just recently released after serving only months in jail.
According to local news reports, the family of Daysha Carter, a woman and mother from Luling, Louisiana, received harrowing news this week, ahead of the young woman’s 1-year death anniversary. Last year, just after the Christmas holiday on December 26, Carter was killed by 21-year-old Brogan Freeman, who was driving drunk and collided with Carter’s vehicle on Interstate 3-10. The terrible and fatal drunk driving car accident happened in Luling, and Daysha Carter had been traveling with her young son and her son’s father.
Now, this year, Carter’s family received a call informing them that Daysha’s drunk driving car accident killer was released from jail, after only serving several months in prison. Records reveal that Freeman was sentenced to 15 years for causing the death of Carter, with only 5 of them to be served in prison. Freeman is reported by the Department of Corrections to have served a portion of his sentence. The Department of Corrections released a statement indicating “Brogan Fremen [sic] released from prison onto good-time parole supervision after serving 35 percent of his Vehicular Homicide sentence as required by law.” Carter’s mother said of the death of her daughter and the early release of her daughter’s killer, “My child is gone, my grandson don’t [sic] have no mother, my family is destroyed…My family will never be the same again.” She also added, “They just don’t know what they took from us.” Carter’s sister lamented her death, stating, “She always wanted a child…Now, she has one and she’s not here. It’s not fair to him and it’s not fair to us.”
