Louisiana Worker Dies at CF Industries Donaldsonville Nitrogen Complex

WC_Claim

Earlier this year, a terrible and fatal workplace accident shook the community of Donaldsonville, Louisiana. According to local reports, earlier this year in the fall on October 2, an employee of CF Industries passed away at the hospital following a serious on-the-job accident. The accident occurred at the CF Industries Donaldsonville Nitrogen Complex in Ascension Parish, which spans an impressive 1,400 acres along the west bank of the Mississippi River. The Complex is located within the Donaldsonville city limits.

Although few details were provided to the public about the horrific and, ultimately, fatal workplace accident, it is important to note that the CF Industries Donaldsonville Nitrogen Complex is hailed as the “largest ammonia production facility in the world and serves customers on every continent.” Senior Director of Corporate Communications Chris Close said of the terrible and fatal workplace accident that took one CF Industries’ employee’s life, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a CF Industries employee at the Donaldsonville Complex passed away in a local hospital following an accident onsite earlier today…Our thoughts and prayers are with their family at this difficult time. We are committed to supporting the family as well as providing assistance to the Donaldsonville team.”

The Dangers of Ammonia Exposure to Louisiana Workers

Although it is unclear what exactly led to the fatal workplace accident that took the CF Industries’ worker’s life in October, the terrible accident brings to light a discussion about the dangers of ammonia exposure to Louisiana workers. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC), both acute and long-term exposure to ammonia can be dangerous to humans. When it comes to acute ammonia exposure, the CDC warns that, “Anhydrous ammonia reacts with moisture in the mucous membranes to produce an alkaline solution (ammonium hydroxide). Exposure to ammonia gas or ammonium hydroxide can result in corrosive injury to the mucous membranes of the eyes, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract and to the skin due to the alkaline pH and the hygroscopic nature of ammonia.” In terms of long-term ammonia exposure, the CDC also cautions that, “Repeated exposure to ammonia may cause chronic irritation of the respiratory tract. Chronic cough, asthma and lung fibrosis have been reported. Chronic irritation of the eye membranes and dermatitis have also been reported.” In sum, Louisiana workers must be very careful when working with and around ammonia, and should follow all safety rules and regulations regarding working with ammonia.
