Longtime Parish Employee Killed in Lawnmower Accident on the Job – What Can Louisiana Families Do if Their Loved One is Killed at Work?

MowingLawn

A valued longtime employee of Plaquemines Parish was killed in a fatal lawnmower accident while at work earlier this summer in mid-June, and some Louisiana families are wondering what they can do if their loved one is killed at work under Louisiana laws. According to local news reports, WDSU News, on Tuesday, June 11, Plaquemines Parish worker Rene Ancar was tasked with cutting grass on Buras Highway 11 when he was killed in a lawnmower accident involving the zero-turn lawnmower he was operating. While the details of the horrific accident are sparse, investigators report that they do not suspect foul play was involved in the fatal lawnmower accident that claimed Mr. Ancar’s life. Mr. Ancar was a parish maintenance team employee for many years, and was described as a “dedicated team member.” Plaquemines Parish President Keith Hinkley said of the horrific and fatal workplace accident, “It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rene Ancar, a valued Parish employee. Rene, who had dedicated many years to our public right-of-way maintenance team, tragically lost his life yesterday, June 11, 2024 while operating a zero-turn lawn mower along Highway 11 in Buras. The cause of his death is currently under investigation. I, along with my administration, extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”

Louisiana Families May File a Workers’ Compensation Claim to Recover Compensation after a Death of a Loved One Due to a Fatal Workplace Accident

Mr. Ancar’s tragic death on the job raises questions for some Louisiana families about what they can do if their loved one is killed at work. Under Louisiana workers’ compensation laws, certain dependent family members of Louisiana workers killed at work may be entitled to workers’ compensation death benefits. Workers’ compensation death benefits in Louisiana may include compensation for funeral expenses and medical expenses, weekly death benefits, and other important workers’ compensation benefits. In order to determine whether you may have a claim for workers’ compensation death benefits in Louisiana for the unimaginable loss of your loved one, it is best to speak to an experienced Louisiana workers’ compensation lawyer as soon as possible about your specific case.
