Insurance Company Report Reveals Top Way Workers Get Injured On The Job, Number Of Average Days Of Missed Work

WorkOfficeInjury

In an effort to help employers understand the top common causes of worker injury to prevent tragic and serious workplace injuries, insurance company The Travelers Cos., reviewed more than 1.2 million workers’ compensation claims. At the end of the day, the insurance company found that there are a number of common causes of workplace injuries that show up in a variety of industries throughout the United States. In addition to determining that both aged workers (those workers who are 60-years-old and older) and new workers (those who have been on the job for less than one year) were particularly susceptible to more serious workplace injuries, the study also contains key findings that are helpful to employers to understand how they can make workplace safer for everyone. Here are some of the eye-opening key findings from the report:

  • On average, workers who filed for workers’ compensation claims between the years 2016 and 2020 missed an average of 71 days of work due to their workplace injury. Of all the industries included in the study, the construction industry had the highest average number of lost work days due to workplace injury;
  • Overexertion was the number one leading cause of workplace injury on the job. Overexertion caused 29% of workplace injuries between 2016 and 2020. Slips, trips, and falls came in second at 23% of total workplace injuries, while being struck by an object on the job was responsible for 13% of workplace injuries. Motor vehicle-involved accidents and “caught in or caught-between” accidents both accounted for 5% of total workplace accidents;
  • When it comes to types of workplace injuries, strains and sprains were the most common type of workplace injury, accounting for 38% of workers’ compensation claims between 2016 and 2020. Fractures (13%), contusions (8%), inflammation (7%) and dislocations (7%) were next on the list of most common types of worker injuries;
  • Finally, slips, trips, and falls accounted for 83 missed workdays on average per worker injury, while motor vehicle crashes accounted for 79 average missed workdays. Overexertion led workers to miss an average of 71 workdays per injury, and struck-by accidents caused workers to miss an average of 67 work days on average per injury.
