Injured at Work in Mississippi and Need Medical Treatment? Here’s What You Need to Know About Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Medical Expense Reimbursement

WorkInjury10

Every day in Mississippi workers are injured on the job in every type of industry imaginable. From office jobs to hard labor, workers in virtually every workplace are at risk of injury from everyday workplace hazards (and some surprise ones) that may temporarily put them out of work, or even permanently disable them. In order to help injured workers get back on their feet and to help them survive while they are unable to work due to a workplace injury, states all across the United States have developed workers’ compensation programs. In Mississippi, under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws, most Mississippi workers (with some exceptions) are entitled to important workers’ compensation benefits, such as wage replacement benefits to help workers survive with no regular income, rehabilitation training to get them back to work, and medical cost reimbursement to help them receive and pay for necessary medical treatment. But what types of medical costs are covered under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws? Here’s what Mississippi workers need to know:

Types of Medical Costs Reimbursed Under Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Laws

Mississippi workers’ compensation laws are undoubtedly complex. In fact, Title 20 of the Mississippi Administrative Code contains a number of rules and regulations regarding workers’ compensation medical fee schedules, and billing and reimbursement rules. However, for injured workers, the most important thing is knowing what types of medical expenses are covered so that they can get treatment without going bankrupt. Typically, in Mississippi workers’ compensation cases, eligible workers are entitled to medical expense reimbursement for things like visits with their doctor, medication costs, physical therapy services, prosthetics, bloodwork and laboratory tests ordered by a doctor, in-patient stays at hospitals, medical supplies for injury treatment (dressings, casts, etc.), X-ray and MRI costs, surgical costs, and other necessary medical treatment ordered by a doctor. In order to determine whether your specific medical expense may be reimbursed under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws, it is best to speak with an experienced Mississippi workers’ compensation lawyer about your particular concern.

IMEs and Medical Costs

Some injured workers are sent for what is called an “IME” or Independent Medical Examination. This is an examination that is, importantly, ordered by the insurance company and paid by the insurance company. Injured workers should be aware that they are not required to pay for IMEs. Critically, an IME doctor is typically not your regular doctor and is not necessarily “on your side.” It is best to speak with a lawyer before your IME to protect your rights.
