Houston Man on First Date Killed by Drunk Driver, Date Recounts Tragic and Senseless Accident: “Joe Wasn’t Doing Anything Wrong”; Louisiana Drunk Driving Wrongful Death Claims Explained

CarAcc10

A Houston man’s tragic death at the hands of a drunk driver earlier this year in April underscores the senseless deaths caused by drunk driving, and serves as a reminder to Louisiana residents who have lost loved ones to drunk driving car accidents that they too may have rights and options for seeking justice under Louisiana personal injury laws.

According to Fox 26 local news, Briana Iturrino, the date of a man she only knew as “Joe” was at the scene of the terrible drunk driving car accident than claimed her first date’s life just outside the Voodoo Donut shop in the 1200 block of Westheimer Road in Montrose. Iturrino recounted just what happened when the man she spent a fun and dynamic evening with suddenly died right in front of her eyes, stating, “Where that curve is if you don’t turn [sic] you’re going to go up on the sidewalk and the car wasn’t going to make the turn. It was going too fast. I knew it wasn’t going to make the turn, and then it was coming at us, and Joes was gone. It was very traumatizing.”

The car Iturrino describes in her statement belongs to none other than 32-year-old Kristina Rose Chambers, the operator of the vehicle that killed Joe that evening. According to Houston detectives, Chambers was driving while intoxicated when she ran up over the curb onto the sidewalk and hit Joe, then continued through a parking lot and smashed into a pole. Chambers is reported to have been traveling with two other passengers in her vehicle. The two passengers were taken to the hospital along with Chambers, who was placed under arrest. Joe was, notably, only 33 years old at the time he was killed.

Of the accident, Iturrino concludes, “Joe wasn’t doing anything wrong. He wasn’t speeding. He wasn’t drinking, but he doesn’t get to have a 34th birthday. She [Chambers] might go to jail for what she’s done, but she gets to get [sic] to 34 and 35.” Chambers was ultimately charged with the felony crime of Intoxication Manslaughter.
