Gas Station Clerk, Two Others Killed in Deadly Robbery at Mississippi Gas Station – Are Mississippi Workers Entitled to Workers’ Compensation Benefits for Injuries Caused by Violent, Criminal Acts?

GasStation

The death of three people, including a gas station clerk, at a State Line, Mississippi gas station has garnered public attention, and family members of those who were killed are demanding answers from law enforcement. According to local news reports, on Wednesday, January 31, gas station clerk Rhonda Denson, her boyfriend Lester Campbell, and a customer of the Clark’s Exxon gas station located on Saint Peter Street were killed by gunfire at 6:00 a.m., just as the store opened. The suspect who killed the three victims first killed Exxon clerk Rhonda Denson’s boyfriend, as he was walking into the store. Denson’s boyfriend had just dropped her off at the Exxon gas station for her shift at work. Then, the suspect, who was wearing a mask and gloves, killed a customer who was in the store, and stole his wallet. As the crime was in progress, Denson ran to a back room and locked herself in the room. However, horrifically, the robbery suspect broke into the back room, dragged Denson into the front of the store, and forced her to open the cash register and safe. After Denson followed his orders, he shot her in the face, killing her. Police indicate that the suspect had stolen a black Toyota Camry from a gas station customer and then ditched it four miles away. The search for the dangerous, violent suspect is still underway, as a family and community mourn the victims who were killed in the senseless robbery.

Mississippi Workers May be Entitled to Workers’ Compensation Benefits for Injuries Sustained in Violent, Criminal Workplace Incidents

The terrible and gruesome case raises a question about the rights of Mississippi workers under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws when they are injured due to another person’s violent criminal acts. Mississippi workers who are injured in the course of a violent incident with another person may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits for their injuries. However, Mississippi workers’ compensation benefits may not be granted if the worker willfully caused their own injuries, if they were drunk or intoxicated, leading to their injuries, and if they themselves provoked the incident of violence. Workers’ compensation cases in Mississippi are complex, and every case has its own unique set of facts and circumstances, so it is best to speak with an experienced Mississippi workers’ compensation lawyer about your case if you are seeking Mississippi workers’ compensation benefits.
