Fire at Louisiana Chevron Plant Burns Two Workers, Spreads Burn Awareness

WC_13

A frightening and extremely dangerous fire at a Chevron plant in Louisiana that injured two workers spreads awareness to Louisiana workers about the dangers of burn injuries in Louisiana workplaces. According to local news reports, on Thursday, September 19, at around 8:30 a.m. in the morning, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Chevron plant located at 30 W. Geismar in Geismar, Louisiana to respond to reports of a fire. Although details as to exactly how the fire started and how the two Chevron plant employees were injured are sparse, Chevron itself released the following statement detailing the events: “Chevron Renewable Energy Group experienced a fire at our Geismar, LA renewable diesel production facility on the morning of September 19. All employees have been accounted for, with two employees receiving treatment for burns. The fire has been contained with the support of local resources and the team is working to safely and methodically shut down the facility. We are extremely grateful to the local responders for their immediate response. We continue to learn more information and will be conducting a thorough review to understand the cause of the fire.”

At the time of recent news reports, the investigation into the fiery blaze that injured the two workers was ongoing.

Burns Injuries Affect Hundreds of Thousands of Workers in the United States

According to the National Library of Medicine, from the years 1999 to 2008 alone, there were a total of 1,132,000 burn injuries that happened in American workplaces. It is clear from these numbers that although burn injury rates have declined by 40% over the last 10 years, there are still countless victims of burn injuries in the workplace each year. Burn injuries are most common in workplaces in the food service industry, in manufacturing, and in construction work. In addition, scalding burns and thermal burns are the most common type of workplace burn, totaling 60% of all workplace burns. There is no doubt that employers that employ workers who are susceptible to burns in the workplace must emphasize burn reduction on the job, and workers must remain vigilant in the workplace and adhere to safety rules and guidance to avoid serious, and even fatal, burn accidents.
