Drunk and High FedEx Truck Driver Crashes into Louisiana Home, Rights of Drunk Driving Truck Accident Victims Explained

TractorTrailer

Most people in Louisiana do not think twice about whether or not their delivery drivers drive safely when they are out on the road. As consumers in this modern world buying goods online, we trust the people that bring us our products and goods that we use in our daily lives, and we rely on the safe and sound delivery of those goods from the retailer and warehouse shelves to our doors. However, the truth of the matter is that delivery trucks are operated by delivery drivers, and delivery drivers, like all people, are human and can make mistakes. Accordingly, 18-wheeler truck, commercial truck, and mail delivery drivers can and do make mistakes and the consequences, due to the large size of these vehicles, can be deadly and destructive. Such was the case earlier this year when an allegedly drunk and high FedEx driver plowed his delivery truck into a Houma, Louisiana home.

According to local reports, WLBT News 3, a Louisiana delivery driver for FedEx was under both the influence of drugs and alcohol when he plowed his delivery truck into a home on Mary Hughes Drive on the morning of Monday, March 25. The FedEx driver was still behind the wheel of the vehicle when it crashed into the home. The driver was identified as 31-year-old Michael Smith, who failed a sobriety test at the scene of the accident. Mr. Smith was also found by authorities to be in possession of an open alcoholic drink, as well as marijuana and tramadol, a pain-relief opioid medication. Mr. Smith is said to have not been cooperative at the scene of the crime, and he was finally taken into custody after refusing to get into a police patrol car and failing to cooperate with officers at the scene. Mr. Smith was ultimately charged with multiple drug possession, reckless operation, DWI and resisting an officer.
