Death of Mississippi Valley State University Player Killed in High-Speed Chase Sheds Light on the Rights of Families of Car Passengers Killed in Fatal Crashes

The tragic and unexpected death of a Mississippi Valley State University football player at the end of last year raises questions about the rights and options of the family members of passengers who are killed in fatal car accidents under Mississippi personal injury laws. According to local news reports, on Friday, November 6, Mobile, Alabama native and MVSU football player Ryan Quinney was killed in a serious car accident following a high-speed chase by police officers. Reports indicate that Quinney was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a driver who has yet to be identified, when a high-speed chase ensued. The chase began in the Flora area, with Flora police tailing the car that Quinney was riding in. Once the vehicle passed the Big Black River in Yazoo County, the Mississippi Highway Patrol “took over” the chase, but then lost sight of the vehicle and ended the chase. However, shortly thereafter, Bailey Martin, an officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol states that the Yazoo City Police Department contacted the MHP and informed them of a “wreck that ended in a yard on Talbert Drive,” in Yazoo County.

Jaws of life were required to free the driver of the car, and unfortunately, Ryan Quinney passed away at the scene of the accident. Investigators believe that the car crash occurred after the driver of the car Quinney was riding in lost control and “left the road, going through a ditch.” The car was believed to have then hit a parked vehicle on the adjacent street, become airborne, hit a street light, and then flipped-over several times. Of Quinney, the MVSU Facebook page said in honor of the young football player who lost his life too soon, “Ryan was a bright light in our community with a spirit that lifted everyone around him. He will be deeply missed by his friends, faculty, and all who knew him.”

Can the Families of Passengers Killed in Fatal Car Accidents in Mississippi Do Anything to Get Justice Under Mississippi Personal Injury Laws?

The tragic death of Ryan Quinney raises the question of whether the family members of a passenger who is killed in a fatal car accident, due to the potential negligent or criminal actions of the car’s driver, have any rights to justice under Mississippi laws. The truth of the matter is that under Mississippi personal injury wrongful death laws, certain close family members of those passengers who have been killed in fatal car accidents by their own driver may have rights and options for compensation. In order to determine whether you may have a case for compensation under Mississippi personal injury wrongful death laws, it is best to speak to an experienced Mississippi personal injury lawyer about your case.
