Crane Segment Falls at Fort Lauderdale Construction Site Killing Worker, Injuring Two on Ground

Crane

A Florida construction worker was tragically killed this week on Thursday when a crane segment that was being used on a high-rise construction project fell from the high-rise onto a bridge. According to local Florida news reports, the April 4 accident happened around 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon on the Southeast Third Avenue bridge over the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida. According to investigators, the tragic workplace accident occurred when crane segments, used to extend the distance a crane can reach, were being added to a crane located at the high-rise construction site. Investigators believe that a large crane segment “became unstable and failed, causing the piece to tumble to the bridge below.” As a result of the crane segment falling, a worker who was at the high-rise construction site fell from the height and was killed. In addition to the worker who died as a result of the accident, two other people were injured and had to be transported to Broward Health hospital for emergency medical treatment. The two victims were on the ground when the accident occurred and were in their car when the crane segment crashed down onto the bridge. Screams were reportedly heard coming from the area of the bridge after the accident, and, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Chief Stephen Gollan, the bridge will remain closed until it is deemed safe to use again. As of today, the crane segment can be found still on top of one of the vehicles it crushed on the bridge. Two vehicles were crushed by the crane segment when it fell on the bridge, but fortunately no other casualties were reported.
