Airport Worker’s Recent Death by being “Ingested” into Engine of Airplane is Not an Isolated Incident
News of a San Antonio, Texas, airport worker who died by being “ingested” into an aircraft engine on the airfield spread like wildfire across online news outlets, newspapers, and television screens this week. According to national news reports, on Friday, June 23, at the San Antonio airport, an airport worker was ingested into the engine of the Delta Flight 1111 aircraft servicing a flight from Los Angeles. The cause of death of the airport worker has been listed as “blunt and sharp force injuries.” The matter of death, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, is listed as “suicide.” Unifi Aviation, the employer of the deceased airport worker issued the following statement in regards to the tragic workplace death: “Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we remain focused on supporting our employees on the ground and ensuring they are being taken care of during this time…From our initial investigation, this incident was unrelated to Unifi’s operational process, safety procedures and policies. Out of respect for the deceased, we will not be sharing any additional information. While police and other officials continue to investigate this incident, we defer to them on providing further details.”
Airport Worker in Montgomery, Alabama Ingested into Airplane Engine in January, 2023
Unfortunately, the gruesome and tragic death that befell the San Antonio airport worker last week is not the first incident of an engine-ingestion incident at an airport this year. Earlier this year in January, an airport worker at the Montgomery Regional Airport was ingested into the engine of an Embraer 170 aircraft operated by Envoy Air. The aircraft was “parked at the gate with the parking brake set when a ground personnel was ingested,” according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Montgomery Regional Airport’s executive director stated, “We are saddened to hear about the tragic loss of a team member of the AA/Piedmont Airlines…our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
