A Precious Life Taken Too Soon: Remembering a New Orleans Mother Who was Killed by a Drunk Driver

On December 28, 2023, a precious life was lost. 26-year-old New Orleans resident Daysha Carter was killed by a drunk driver in a head-on collision in St. Charles Parish, New Orleans. According to local news reports, Nola.com, Daysha Carter was driving home with her boyfriend from a Christmas event at her aunt’s home in Luling, Louisiana on Christmas night, 2023. Ms. Carter and her boyfriend were traveling northbound on Louisiana’s Interstate 310 when 20-year-old Brogan Freman hit their vehicle from behind. Mr. Freman was driving a 2021 Ram pickup truck when he hit the couple’s Ford. The Ram turned over on the highway, while the Ford was forced off of the highway from the impact, according to investigators. Notably, investigators believed that Mr. Freman had been driving while intoxicated, leading to the terrible car accident.

Ms. Carter was taken to University Medical Center for lifesaving treatment, but CT scans revealed that she had no brain function. Ms. Carter’s family was forced to make the difficult decision to take her off of life support, and she passed away the following Tuesday evening, according to her close family members. In addition, Ms. Carter’s boyfriend suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized, also needing staples in the back of his head from a head injury as a result of the accident. Ms. Carter left behind her new baby boy, who had only just been born on October 4, and who Ms. Carter had been driving back to see at her home. Of Ms. Carter, her mother, Kendra Carter said, “She adored her baby. She loved him. She was on her way home for him. I’m just glad he wasn’t in the car…She’d call me for every crazy thing…I want to say that I’m going to miss you, my tall, boujee, beautiful daughter.”
