Louisiana Worker Dies in Oil Field Accident by Crushing Injury

Oilfield

There is no doubt that oil work and oil workers are critical to the way we live our everyday lives, and are the first source of important materials that make products that we use every day. Indeed, without oil workers, Louisiana families would be without the critical oil that is used for things like fueling cars, powering homes, and creating plastics and other materials that we use. However, as important as oil workers and oil work is, it is also very dangerous, and workers can be seriously injured and even killed on the job in oil fields. Unfortunately, one such accident happened just last week in Louisiana.

According to local news reports, on Wednesday, February 26, an oil worker from Sulphur, Louisiana, was killed in an oil field accident in Calcasieu Parish. The terrible and fatal workplace accident occurred around 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon on that Wednesday. Reports indicate that Calcasieu Parish deputies arrived at the scene of the accident and found 21-year-old Marcus D. Humphries deceased. Humphries was reported to have suffered a fatal crushing accident at the workplace, when a piece of heavy machinery fell on top of him. The piece of machinery that killed Humphries was reported to be 9,000 pounds. While foul play is not suspected in the case, investigators believe that the crew Humphries was working on was working for a drilling contractor called Tiger Well Service. The accident occurred at the Starks Brine Field, near La. 109. A company called Westlake Corporation operates the facility. Westlake Corporation released the following statement regarding the horrific workplace fatality: “Westlake Corporation expresses its condolences to the family of an individual who was working as a sub-contractor at the company’s Starks, Louisiana brine field, and lost his life in an industrial accident on February 26, 2025. The company has initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident and will work with its contractors to ensure that action is taken to prevent this type of accident from reoccurring.” The accident is currently under investigation.

Louisiana Workers Who are Injured on the Job Have Rights Under Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Laws

In light of the unfathomable and fatal workplace accident that took young Marcus D. Humphries’ life, it is important for Louisiana workers to know their rights when it comes to Louisiana workers’ compensation laws. Under Louisiana workers’ compensation laws, most workers who have been injured on the job in a serious workplace accident, and who are unable to work are entitled to important financial compensation to help them heal from their injury and return to their jobs. In addition, when a Louisiana worker is killed in a fatal workplace accident, certain dependent members of their family may be entitled to workers’ compensation death benefits.
