Additional Details Released in Mississippi Work Accident Described as “Most Excruciating Work Accident You Can Imagine”

WorkInjury6

The terrible and unimaginable death of a Mississippi worker who died in the most tragic of work accidents has shocked a community, and new details have come to light that help to fully paint a picture of the true horror that the worker endured. For those Mississippians who missed earlier reports regarding the accident, the details are gruesome. According to news reports, 41-year-old Darrell Sheriff, of Mississippi, was working as a private contractor earlier this month on November 4 when tragedy struck. Sheriff was involved in a “freak accident” at work involving a dump truck and a load of hot, burning asphalt. At around 10:30 a.m. on that November morning, Jackson, Mississippi police received a call reporting that an accident occurred. Officers arrived on the scene and found Sheriff “buried under hot asphalt.” Officers reveal that the fatal work accident likely had something to do with the dump trunk, stating that “It appeared to be some type of malfunction with his dump truck.” Indeed, when the terrible and horrific accident occurred, Sheriff was reportedly underneath the truck “working on a hydraulic line” when the tailgate is believed to have accidentally opened up, and the asphalt then poured onto Sheriff.

Eyewitnesses who were on the scene took efforts to save Sheriff, but the asphalt “burned and eventually consumed the man.” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said of the accident and the efforts of the bystanders, “They said he tried to fight to make it through those injuries, but they were just too enormous for him to survive.” Although police have ruled Sheriff’s untimely workplace death an “accident” for now, they are continuing to investigate. Sheriff Wade indicated that Darrell Sheriff’s family members described him as a “good, hardworking man, just trying to make a living.”

The Dangers of Hot Asphalt to Mississippi Workers – A Potentially “Hidden” Danger on the Job

Hot asphalt, like the asphalt that killed Darrell Sheriff, can be extremely dangerous for workers. Lone Star Paving, a company that weighed in on the Darrell Sheriff article, noted that “When asphalt is delivered to job sites, it typically arrives at scorching hot temperatures of about 275 to 300 degrees.” In addition, asphalt can cause skin irritation and burns, and workers can be injured by the toxic fumes that are emitted from hot asphalt. Accordingly, Mississippi workers who work with asphalt must be extremely careful on the job to prevent serious, even fatal, workplace accidents.
