Mississippi Worker’s Death after Falling Through School Roof Highlights Dangers of Working on Roofs in Mississippi

RoofWorker

Just before the 2024 Christmas holiday, a terrible and unfortunate workplace accident shook the community of Crystal Springs, Mississippi. According to local news reports, on Friday, December 20, a worker who was working on the roof of a school fell through the roof, and was killed. The fatal workplace accident occurred at Crystal Springs Middle School. The worker who died in the fall accident at the middle school was a 31-year-old roof worker who was working for a private company when the accident happened. The worker, identified as Eduardo Moran, was hired by the company to repair or replace the Crystal Springs Middle School roof. School was not in session when the fatal workplace accident occurred, as students had been let out for the winter holiday break. Gerome LeFlore, the director of safety for Copiah County School District, reported that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the unfortunate and fatal workplace death.

Risk Factors for Serious and Fatal Workplace Accidents Involving Roofs in Mississippi

The fatal accident that claimed Mr. Moran’s life is a sad and unfortunate example of how Mississippi workers can be injured when working on roofs. There are a number of risk factors for workplace accidents involving roofs of which Mississippi workers should be aware, in order to keep safe while working on roofing jobs. First of all, working on roofs and rooftops presents a fall from heights hazard, which is a leading cause of serious injuries and deaths among roof workers. Roofs that are missing roof edges and guardrails can be especially dangerous, and the improper use of ladders in order to reach roof heights and to get down from roofs also can lead to serious accidents. Secondly, inclement weather can contribute to dangerous roof work. Slick, wet, and icy roofs can be a slip and fall hazard for workers, and extreme heat in the summer can lead to heatstroke and other serious heat-related illnesses and injuries. Finally, roofing material can also be dangerous to workers. Roof materials may contain hazardous materials and substances, such as asbestos and other dangerous chemicals, and exposure to these toxic materials, especially on a long-term basis, can lead to serious workplace illnesses and medical conditions among roof workers.
