Louisiana Workers Injured by Struck-By Accident on Causeway Bridge Underscores Dangers of Struck-By Accidents to Louisiana Construction Workers

WorkInjury16

Earlier this year in February two Louisiana workers were injured as a result of a “struck by” accident on Louisiana’s Causeway bridge. The scary and avoidable accident serves as an example of the dangers that Louisiana workers face every day on the job when they are out on the road with drivers and vehicles. According to local Louisiana news reports, on Monday, February 26, two bridge workers were working on Louisiana’s Causeway bridge when an allegedly distracted driver ran into the back of their work truck. The crash occurred around 1:10 p.m. between the drawbridge section of the bridge and the top of the bridge. The bridge workers had been called to the worksite on the Causeway bridge to remove debris that was on the bridge.

As a result of the allegedly distracted driving accident, one of the bridge workers involved broke three ribs and the other worker sustained cuts to the body. According to Causeway General Manager Carleton Dufrechou, the work truck that the workers were using was “probably a total loss” in the accident. Fortunately, according to Dufrechou, both of the bridge workers that were involved in the accident will “be ok [sic]”.

The Dangers of Struck-By Accidents at Louisiana Job Sites

Struck-by accidents, like the one the two workers were involved in on the Causeway bridge, occur when a worker is impacted by another object. In this case, the object that struck the workers violently was the vehicle that crashed into their work truck, causing their injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2019, these types of struck-by accidents (struck-by accidents caused by vehicles) accounted for 47% of all fatalities in the construction sector. To contrast, struck-by accidents where a falling object was involved only accounted for 27% of fatal construction accidents. In sum, it is clear that struck-by accidents, especially those involving vehicles colliding with workers or work vehicles, are extremely dangerous and happen all-too-frequently. Accordingly, Louisiana workers should exercise caution on worksites where struck-by accidents may happen, and should also know their rights in the event that they are injured on the job and are unable to work.
