Tragic December 2022 Louisiana Truck Accident that Claimed 3 Southern University Students’ Lives Remembered

Truck13

In December, 2022, Louisiana experienced the tragic deaths of three promising young Southern University men. According to national news reports, 19-year-old Broderick Moore, 19-year-old Tyran Williams, and 21-year-old Dylan Young, were killed in a two-vehicle accident in the evening hours of December 7. Although no person’s life should ever be cut short by a terrible accident, the loss of the three young men is remembered as especially tragic not only because of their ages, but because they were all budding musicians. Two of the three young students were tuba players and the other a percussionist in the Southern University marching band, also known as the Human Jukebox.

The second vehicle that was involved in the accident that claimed the lives of the three young Southern University students was an 18-wheeler semi-truck. According to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, the collision was a “major crash”. State police reported that the three students were driving a Jeep when it became stalled on Interstate 49 near Powhatan. They attempted to change the Jeep’s flat tire on the shoulder of the Interstate, when the 18-wheeler semi-truck drifted into the shoulder on the Jeep’s left side, and hit the victims. The three young men were, unfortunately, pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the 18-wheeler semi-truck was a 62-year-old man. According to reports, the semi-truck driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time and sustained no injuries in the accident. Authorities administered a toxicology test to the 18-wheeler truck driver. The loss of the three young men was felt by not only friends, family, and the Southern University community as a whole, but also by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. The Governor stated at the time, “We join the Southern University family and especially the Human Jukebox Marching Band in mourning the deep loss of the three students whose lives were tragically cut short after yesterday’s accident.”

Justice for the Families of Truck Accident Victims in Louisiana

In Louisiana, certain close family members of those who are killed due to the fault of another person in a truck accident or other type of accident may be entitled to money compensation under Louisiana personal injury laws. These types of claims are called “wrongful death” claims, and, although nothing can replace the loss of a loved one, they aim to make certain close family members of those who have passed away due to the fault of another party whole. Compensation under Louisiana personal injury laws for the wrongful death of a loved one may include lost future wages, medical expenses, funeral expenses, and compensation for pain and suffering.
